Please check your syllabus - some include both the environment and animal rights, whilst others don't. Clearly the topics are linked. For example. the BP oil spill was an environmental catastrophe, but many animals were killed. Deforestation is an environmental issue, but it also means the loss of habitats for animals.

Animal Rights issues go a step further, though. Animals are killed and eaten for meat, their skin used to make shoes. Is this right? Does it matter how we treat those animals before we kill them? Factory farming involves keeping animals in tightly confined spaces, never seeing sunlight, just so that we can have cheap meat. Battery chickens are debeaked to stop them from pecking one another to death, just to save money. Does any of this matter?

In the modern world, animals play a vital role in the development of medicines. All medicines are tested on animals before they are given to humans. The assumption is that animals are worth less than humans. Some people argue that as we're all animals, we should be given the same consideration.

How should Christians respond? Some say humans are made to be like God, and have dominion over nature, using it as we choose. Others say God made all creatures, and gave us the role of caretaker or steward. Who is right?
