Prejudice and Discrimination

Sexism , Disability and Religious Prejudice

Racism is certainly the most commonly tested area, and many questions are on the general area of Discrimination.  However, you may be asked specifically about any of these areas.

Sexism

Look at the following pages:

Previous question [2000 Q5]:

(a)   Describe and explain Christian teaching about the roles of men and women.   [8]

This question needs to be carefully balanced, as different churches have opposing views on the role of women.  You should discuss the ordination of women among other topics.

Disability

Read through The GCSE RE Site's page on Disability.  You should be able to explain Christian teaching on Disability, as well as giving examples of Christian organisations the work with people with disabilities.  The most well known is L'arche (the link is to a L'arche community in England - for a shorter introduction, look at L'arche Noah Sealth)

Previous question [1999 Q3]:

(b)    Describe how and explain why some Christians work to help people with disabilities.    [7]

Religious Prejudice

For some quite complex notes on this, look at Faithnet's Christianity and Other Religions page. If nothing else, look at the quotes given, particularly the bits in red.  Chris Wirght's book Key Christian Beliefs has a section about this with a long quote from the World Council of Churches - ask your teacher if they have a copy of this book and make notes.  This only came up as half a question in 1996:

(b)    Explain the attitudes Christians may have towards members of another religion.    [4]

However, you should be prepared for a full question on Christian teaching or how Christians respond.
