Forgiveness

Read through The GCSE RE Site's page on Forgiveness and learn the Christian teaching.

You might be asked this sort of question [1998 Q2]:

(c)    'Being able to forgive is the most important thing in any relationship.'

Do you agree?  Give reasons to support your answer and show that you have thought about different points of view.  You must refer to Christianity in your answer.  [5]

Try answering the following question [1999 Q2]:

(a)    Describe and explain Christian teaching about forgiveness.    [8]

You might include the following points:

• Jesus died on the cross to pay the price for our sins so that we can be forgiven
• As we are forgiven, we should forgive others (Our Father...)
• 'If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.'  1 John 1 v 9
• This question comes up in the relationships section, so you would talk about the need for mutual forgiveness - we all make mistakes. 
• You might refer to 1 Corinthians 13 (love does not keep a record of wrongs) and mention the vows (for better, for worse). 
• As well as arguing for the need for forgiveness to keep a marriage together, you might also think about forgiving those who have divorced and giving them a chance to try again (remarriage).

Why not have a go at (c) above.  Remember that part (c) requires a balanced answer.  You would argue both sides, saying firstly how forgiveness is essential to any relationship and why, but then arguing that there can be more important things (such as being reliable in the first place, trust, love etc.).  You should also include your own opinion.
