Worship 5 - Rabbi

Responsibilities of the rabbi and chazan (cantor)

1997    Q4

(a)    Describe and explain a typical day in the life of a rabbi.    [8]

(b)    How might a rabbi give practical help to Jews trying to follow the law on their family life?    [7]

(c)    'Rabbis have always been men.  No woman can be a proper rabbi.'

Do you agree?  Give reasons to support your answer and show that you have thought about different points of view.  You must refer to Judaism in your answer.  [5]

This is the sort of question you need to be ready for.  In (a) you can include both Orthodox and Reform rabbis - you will impress the examiner if you can explain the difference!  Have a look at the following pages with the above question in mind:

Several text books give a typical day in the life of a rabbi.  (b) is the more difficult question.  This is not really about knowing the scriptures (a rabbi's speciality).  Think of practical ways in which a couple might need support.

(c) requires a clear understanding of the different beliefs of Reform and Orthodox Jews and the reasons for them.  Remember to include balance!

This is a particularly hard question, so use your class notes and text books to help.  Try answering the whole thing.  See how long it takes, and then work out a way to get it done in under 30 minutes.
