Contraception

Birth and Death

Introduction

Catholics see the condom as largely responsible for the increase in casual sexual relationships in the West since the 1960s. Using contraceptives cheapens sexual intercourse, they argue.

The Catholic Church sees reproduction as the main purpose of sex. As a result, they consider contraception 'unnatural' as the natural purpose of sex is to have babies.

Other Christians recognise that not every couple is ready to start a family. Sex can bring a couple closer, so it is okay to have sex without the possibility of pregnancy.

Some Christians would also support the use of contraception for people who are not married. Even though the church teaches that marriage is the right place for sex, many people have sex outside marriage, and this can lead to unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases. A lot of Christians see the need for contracpetion to prevent this.
