Contraception

Birth and Death

Practical Responses

The Catholic Church disagrees with contraception, and teaches that Christians should find alternatives to artificial contraception. This most commonly means the 'rhythym method'. This involves an awareness of a woman's monthly cycle, avoiding sexual intercourse on those days when conception is most likely to occur.

Quiverfull

Some organisations actively promote fertility and oppose the use of contraceptives. For example, Quiverfull is a Protestant organisation that eschews all forms of contraception, seeing all children as blessings from God.

Abstain, Be faithful, use Condom

Some Christians see contraception as vital in preventing STIs and unwanted pregnancies. For example, in Uganda AIDS has reduced life expectancy from the mid 50s in the 1980s to below 40 now. Christians argue that the most effective way of combatting STIs is to challenge and change behaviours. However, if encouraging people not to have sex, or to be faithful to one partner, doesn't work, having sex with condoms is better than having unprotected sex.
