Suicide

Birth and Death

The Bible and Suicide

The Bible contains a number of passages where someone pleads with God or another person to kill them, or actually takes their own life:

I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me. If this is how you are going to treat me, put me to death right now (Moses in Numbers 11:14,15)

Saul said to his armour-bearer, "Draw your sword and run me through, or these uncircumcised fellows will come and run me through and abuse me."     But his armour-bearer was terrified and would not do it; so Saul took his own sword and fell on it. (1 Samuel 31:4)

He came to a broom tree, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. "I have had enough, LORD," he said. "Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors." (1 Kings 19:4)

It is also well known that Judas committed suicide after having betrayed Jesus. There is nothing in these passages, which are similar to many more examples in the Bible, that suggests any support for these actions. The Bible is full of passages that show how valuable life is.
