There are a number of films that deal with suicide and attempted suicide, in a variety of ways. For example, the Director's cut of the Butterfly Effect has a much more powerful ending. The key character, having travelled back in time to various stages of his life to try, unsuccessfully to prevent the suffering of his friends and family, finally travels back to when he was in the womb, and strangles himself with his umbilical cord. This is another example of the principle of love (here, very much sacrificial love) versus the sanctity of life.

What Dreams May Come After losing both her children, a woman (Annabella Sciorra) is driven into a mental assylum, helped through this only by her loving husband. When he (Robin Williams) dies, he finds himself in heaven, a beautifully realised effort with some amazing direction. The Heaven scene is suitable for much younger children. However, his wife takes her own life, and she ends up in hell. Her husband leaves the safety of heaven to go and rescue her, if he can...
