Pacifism

War, Peace and Human Rights

Church teachings that support pacifism

As you would see from the Church positions on Just War, most churches support the use of military force in some circumstances. Some denominations are pacifist, such as Quakers, Mennonites, Brethren and Amish.

Society of Friends (Quakers)

Quakers believe that all people carry the inner light of the divine, and it is therefore wrong to kill anyone. The Quaker declaration of Pacifism states:

"We utterly deny all outward wars and strife, and fightings with outward weapons, for any end, or under any pretense whatever;  this is our testimony to the whole world.  The Spirit of Christ by which we are guided is not changeable, so as once to command us from a thing as evil, and again to move unto it;  and we certainly know, and testify to the world, that the Spirit of Christ, which leads us into all truth, will never move us to fight and war against any man with outward weapons, neither for the kingdom of Christ, nor for the kingdoms of this world." to Charles II, 1660

"Let us then try what love can do: for if men did once see we love them, we should soon find they would not harm us." William Penn
