Causes of Poverty

Wealth and Poverty

Multimedia

There are some amazing videos on the Make Poverty History site. My all-time favourite film is there - scroll down to Drop the Debt which plays like a music video but was directed by Anthony Minghella and has a really clear message about the stupidity of 'third world debt'.

Here are some other resources on DVD:

Beyond Borders - This film is set in the 1980s and stars Clive Owen and Angelina Jolie. It is well made and looks good, although the swearing may make it difficult to show to some audiences. It tries to be very honest about the realities of delivering aid to war-torn regions, even if it can be slightly heavy-handed in places. Students really enjoy this film.

Live Aid - A wonderful reminder of who was on the music scene in the early 80s. This also has the original news report that started it all, as well as the singles from UK and USA. There are bits of both concerts - whatever they could find! There is also a documentary showing what they did with the money raised. There is a copy of original program details, including a very moving piece by Bob Geldof.

Live 8 - As well as amazing performances from top musicians, there are some powerful moments too. Annie Lennox sang WHY? as we saw a video of people with Aids, and when Geldof introduced the girl from some original footage from 1984 - now a beautiful woman - it was immensely moving.
