Designer Babies
It is not clear what is meant by the term 'Designer Baby'. Tabloid newspapers often use the term in any cases where a degree of selection has taken place - PGD to reject embryos with inherited disorder, PGS for gender etc. In IVF, the healthiest embryos are usually selected, but the term 'Designer baby' is not used. This may be because the parents were not making a specific choice about the baby they were going to have.
The term is also used to describe other possibilities - selection of embryos based on looks, intelligence, strength etc. It is very rare for clinics to offer these choices, and it isn't clear that it would be legal to do so in most countries. However, some people argue that it is just a matter of time until this sort of selection will become commonplace. Then we really will see 'Designer babies'.
