Introduction
- There are 500 million people with physical disabilities; half are children. Every year half a million children lose eyesight through lack of Vitamin A. 100 million are disabled through malnutrition.
- Most disabled people agree that other people’s attitudes make their situation worse. E.g. over-protection, embarrassment, ignorance, stereotyping, being patronised, linking physical disability with mental handicap.
- Can be difficult for disabled to get a good education. Not all schools have facilities or qualified staff to cater for individual needs. Lack of places at special schools.
- Shops, transport and public places do not have adequate facilities in most cases, so disabled do not get equal opportunity to do things the rest of us take for granted. This is slowly improving.
