The following summary of a Christian approach to environmental ethics was written by Lib Fisher, an A level student at the Arnewood School, in January 2007:

Christians feel the world was given to us as a gift from God and that it is our duty to preserve the environment just as God had made for us. They believe in the idea of stewards in that humans are responsible to God for their use of this world. They must understand the impact of their actions upon the environment and their responsibility to create a balance between consumption and conservation. In that we should make a balance between providing for our country and for protecting our environment. Looking after the environment can be originated back to the bible whereby God created the world and gave it to Adam and Eve with Adam being given control over the birds and creatures on earth. It is also argued that we are all made in the “image of god” and it is him who created the universe and we have no right to ruin this universe given to us.

Catholics may approach the environment that we have a right to do well and avoid evil and polluting the environment is seen as an evil act. The primary precepts, which include worshipping god, ordered society, reproduction and to learn and defend the innocent are to be followed. We should see god’s creation an act of worship and treasure and preserve the universe as much as we can. To destroy the earth that god gave to us would be wrong thus we are creating a secondary precept. Everything is seen as having intrinsic value including all creatures and trees. Therefore Catholics are against damaging the environment in any way.

In conclusion it is seen that Christians feel damaging the environment is wrong as in a way it is punishing God .God has given us the land and we are to preserve it not to mistreat it. With Natural law viewing that everything has intrinsic value it is hard to see whether they feel a human life is more important than that of a tree? What could also become an issue is that if we carry on polluting it will create catastrophic consequences soon and there will be no reproduction as there will be no people left.
