June 2015:

  1. Explain why there are different ethical views about the status of the embryo.
  2. 'Potential life should always be protected from harm.' Discuss.

This question was from the OCR Website :

  1. Explain Kant’s theory of duty.

  2. To what extent is Kant’s ethical theory a good approach to human embryo research?

The following is an A2 exam question from 2005:

'Religious ethics prevent progress in embryo research.' Discuss. [45]

The following is an extended essay question for Ethics 1 at A2:

Discuss critically the ethical issues raised by embryo research. [90]

(taken from the OCR website)

Please bear in mind that this is an A2 question, and the style of questions for AS is different. It is also not an exam question as such. However, it is a challenge - have a go!

The mark scheme says:

Candidates would be expected to be aware of the contemporary debate, in terms of what the legal situation is, and where contemporary research is going, although there is no expectation that knowledge will include vast amounts of medical detail. It is not particularly important whether candidates focus on one avenue of foetal research as opposed to the whole gamut of possibilities, so long as the discussion is coherent and justified. In evaluation, candidates should assess the ways in which these issues might be tackled, by applying ethical theory and religious ethics to the problems raised.

We now have an interactive diagram showing how to answer an ethics exam question, The 'structure' of the paragraph will be different for 'ethical theory' questions, but the basic principles are the same. Try filling it in yourself and print out the completed diagram.
